Be Specific (Your Future as a Creator Depends On It)

Don’t waste your words.

Write to a specific person.

Help that person solve a problem.

Tell that person a story.

Stories take the people along for a ride.

Take them on a ride from point A to B.

Point A = Where they’re at.

Point B = Where they want to be.

If you don’t help a specific person reach a specific goal, then you’re just blabbering.

Your writing could be great.

You could have the greatest structure.

But if the writing isn’t directed towards someone specific, it won’t resonate.

People naturally feel connection.

Connection is a visceral feeling.

People can feel when you’re talking directly to them.

With that said, I have a bone to pick with the creator content that I see online.

There’s so much vague, generic content out there.

It gets lost in the sea of other general content.

You hear people say things like:

  • “Make a plan and work on your goals.”

  • “Manifest what you want.”

  • “Work harder than ever before”

I don’t know how many times I’ve seen those same words pop up on Threads.

And the same people wonder why they’re not growing an audience.

Wondering why they’re not getting likes, retweets, and comments.

It’s because everybody has already heard what they have to say.

People know the general advice they need to follow.

They’ve been hearing that stuff for years.

Here’s the problem with general advice…

It doesn’t give people anything to work on.

It’s too vague!

People want specifics.

3 specific things that everyone wants:

  1. A specific Goal to work on.

  2. Specific steps (to achieve the goal).

  3. Specific examples of people who have achieved the goal.

Let’s break each one down.

A Specific goal to work on

These goals can be:

  • Money related

  • Relationship related

  • Health-related

Help people achieve something tangible.

People should be able to do something when they’re done taking your advice.

For example:

Here’s a goal that I can tangibly help someone accomplish…

Pass the Marketing Cloud Email Specialist certification by knowing these 5 tools:

  1. Data Management

  2. Content Builder

  3. Automation Studio

  4. Journey Builder

  5. Reporting

That’s specific.

Anyone who reads a post like that will know exactly what they’ll be able to do if they follow my advice.

They’ll be able to:

“Pass the email specialist certification.”

Specific steps to follow (To achieve the goal)

If someone wants to pass the email specialist certification, they need to know 5 tools.

Those 5 tools are:

  1. Data Management

  2. Content Builder

  3. Automation Studio

  4. Journey Builder

  5. Reporting

Do you see how specific that is?

I can get as detailed about each tool as I want to.

But even if I don’t get detailed, people still have a roadmap to follow.

They know what to focus on.

They have 5 steps to follow.

It’s not vague advice.

It’s specific.

Anyone who wants to pass the email specialist certification can use that advice.

Specific examples of people who have achieved the goal

This is where you add proof.

People love to see success stories.

It shows them that they can do it too.

They think to themselves:

“If that person can do it, I definitely can”

And that’s what you want them to think.

The reason people don’t care about generic advice is because there’s no reason to take action.

It sounds good to the ear, but people just keep scrolling.

When people see others doing something, it gets them to take action.

People want what other people have.

Use this step to encourage people to take massive action.

In a sea of vague content, the way to stand out is to be specific.

In a nutshell, give people:

  1. A specific Goal to work on.

  2. Specific steps (to achieve the goal).

  3. Specific examples of people who have achieved the goal.

If you follow these 3 steps, you’ll grow an audience that trusts and engages with your content.
