There’s demand for data cloud experts and it’s growing.


That demand is coming from companies buying Data Cloud and Salesforce Partners who need people to implement Data Cloud for their clients.

In this article we’ll talk about three common Data Cloud jobs that companies will need to hire people for.


When I present the job roles, I'll also tell you about the skills and responsibilities you'll need.

Data Cloud Job Roles, Skills, Certs, Responsibilities

Data Cloud Administrator

Data Cloud Admin - {Main Job Role}


The Main Job role of a Data Cloud Administrator is to build the Data Cloud platform and make sure data cloud works the way the business expects it to.


Data Cloud admins need to have foundational data cloud knowledge to build on the data cloud platform.


Which means you need to have the Data Cloud Consultant cert.



Data Cloud Admin - {Responsibilities}


  • Help set up data cloud and prepare it for launch

  • Set up basic connections, users, and permissions

  • Do the initial, low maintenance configurations

  • Connect data sources

  • Map data sources to the harmonized data model

  • Configure identity resolution settings

  • Automate processes using flow

  • Give the right permissions to users

  • Provide reporting

  • Expose data with lightning web components

  • Share the platform changes with Data Cloud users



  • Data modeling

  • Identity resolution

  • Creating calculated insights using visual builder

  • Setting up data actions with connected systems

  • Building primary segments

  • Activating segments to connected platforms

  • Setting up users and permissions

  • Troubleshooting issues when they come up

  • Building reports and dashboards

  • Building flows and automations

  • Validating unification

  • Verifying counts and totals



Data Cloud Admin - {Skills}


To do your Data Cloud Admin job well, you need this set of skills.


  • Be able to build and use flows

  • Configure custom reports and dashboards

  • Configure and manage cloud storage locations

  • Be able to configure user roles and object permissions

  • Troubleshoot and configure access permissions to different buckets (or repositories)


It's a major bonus if you have hands on experience with the Salesforce clouds below.



You also need working knowledge of SQL, Calcultated insights, DBeaver, and Query Workspace.


Of course Data Cloud is pretty new to most companies, so not everyone will have every skill.


Write down the skills that you do have and make a list of those.


That way you can see what you already know vs. what you need to learn.



Data Cloud Admin - {Certifications}


Of course, certifications aren't the end all be all in every job, especially if you have hands on experience in a certain product already.


But it definitely helps your case if you have these Salesforce certifications when you're looking for a Data Cloud job.



A lot of hiring managers will look for someone who has one of these certifications. It helps if you do have one of these certs (or all of them).



Data Cloud Business Analyst

Data Cloud Business Analyst - {Main Job Role}


The Main Job role of a Data Cloud business analyst is to make sure everything brought to data cloud supports a business use case and is valuable.


You need to translate complex data cloud concepts so you can help clients understand the data lifecycle in data cloud.


You need knowledge of the industry that you're working in if you want to be the best BA possible. You are working with the business hand in hand to bring the vision to life.


The mission as a Data Cloud BA is to let the solution architect focus on the technical parts of the project and build the best solution based on the business use cases.


A Data Cloud Business Analyst also needs to:


  • Verify test cases, acceptance criteria

  • uses data cloud to establish data governance and stewardship



Data Cloud Business Analyst - {Responsibilities}


Requirement gathering:


  • Guide conversations and draw out requirements

  • Talk to stakeholders and get the business objectives

  • Be a consensus builder when a decision is in question

  • Design the use cases based on conversations with stakeholders

  • Prioritize epics and user stories based on business objectives

  • Generate user stories

  • Identify opportunities and risks


Document the following:


  • Functional specifications

  • User guides and how to’s

  • Integration workflows

To do your Data Cloud Business Analyst job well, you need this set of skills.


  • Data governance and stewardship experience

  • Data security and data access policies experience

  • Industry-specific data experience and training to identify use cases that are feasable, valuable, and ethical

  • Know how Salesforce CRM works for businesses in your industry.



Data Cloud Business Analyst - {Certifications}





Data Cloud Solution Architect


Data Cloud Solution Architect - {Main Job Role}


A successful Data Cloud solution architect needs to lead the data cloud implementation from a technical point of view with the business analyst.


The solution architect is the technical lead for data cloud.


You have to be able to translate customer use cases into practical tech solutions and do a client readiness assessment to understand the current state of data.


Once you understand the state of data in the company, you design the technical solution from beginning to end.


Throughout the project, you'll need to explain the data lifecycle to clients/stakeholder in easy to understand terms. If you get too technical, you will lose people.


Data Cloud solution architects need to be be detailed, personable, and patient. You have to keep in mind that every data cloud project is a detailed process that requires poise.


As the leader of the project, you'll make sure that admins build the platform based on the agreed upon solution.


You'll also work with QA and business analysts to verify the design is correct.


Anytime something comes up, you're the point person for escalation during the build stage.


You'll plan milestones, integrations, dependencies, and identify budget for each step of the project with the client and business analyst.


You'll be less hands on than a Data Cloud admin, but you'll have a strong technical understanding of Data Cloud capabilities.

  • Service models

  • Loyalty models

  • Commerce models

  • Health models

  • Education models


And hone your skillset in the following areas:


  • Data Strategy

  • Data Design

  • Data Modeling

  • Data Discovery

  • Cross platform identity strategy and design

  • Customer Data Platform

  • Data lake or warehouse

  • Master data management (MDM)

  • Extract, Transform, Load (ETL)

  • Integration platform as a service (iPAAS)

  • Be able to facilitate a technical discussion


  • Stays informed as the Customer 360 Data Model evolves.

  • Know the basics of parties and consent, and key objects in the industry they’re working with like products, cases, accounts.

  • Simplify technical concepts so clients can come to a shared (and understood) vision.

  • Strong facilitation skills for design and discovery project stages.

  • Capability knowledge across multiple clouds to determine how all other clouds map to Data Cloud.

  • Understand the purpose and common use cases for CDP’s, data warehouses, data lakes.

  • Be able to explain where tools overlap.

  • Teach customers what systems to use and when to use them.

  • Explain how all the tools come together and the value it gives to a customer.

  • Knowledge of the broader landscape to understand common needs.
