your story sells - go talk with people

the local market

I went to the local Dallas farmer's market on lower Greenville recently

I met a lady who was sitting in a chair and selling her art at one of the booths

She was sitting in her chair, with her sunglasses on, purple mittens on her hands, a small coat, with a colorful scarf around her neck, sitting in a lawn chair

Standing next to her was a man with a bit of grey in his beard and a soft smile gently supporting the woman and her tiny art exhibit

When i walked by, she said "everything on this table is my original artwork"

So i stopped to take a look at her work.

recent artwork

Side note - recently, i've been drawing. it started with a picture of Oklahoma, then it morphed into the oklahoma state symbol, and now i'm drawing a picture i took on a peaceful walk.

i went on a walk and saw this. I took a picture and wanted to see if i could draw it myself.

this is the original picture that i took on a walk. and i drew the picture above.

PS - This cardboard shape happened by accident & i just started drawing.

stopping - asking - listening

With my newfound love for art, i decided to stop and see what this lady created.

As i looked at her pictures, i asked her one simple question that opened up 30 minutes of conversation.

I asked her "how long have you been an artist?"

Her answer wasn't what i was expecting.

She said she only got into art and drawing in the past two years.

Immediately i connected with her because i just got into drawing as well. so i felt like i related with her.

When i asked her what got her into being an artist, she told me her backstory (which i wont share here due to respect for her privacy).

And as she shared her story, i began to relate and connect with her more and more.

the lies we believe

She talked about how some people think they're bad artists because a teacher said their work wasn't any good. and i related with that. In the 8th grade, i hated art class because i always felt like my work wasn't good enough because the teacher and other people in class could draw so much better than me.

Then we talked about how some people might like a drawing you don't spend that much time on. and other people might hate a drawing that you spend a lot of time on. but it's not about whether other people like your art work. it's about the act of creation itself. art is subjective and beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

It's okay if other people don't like what you create. it's okay if people love the work that you took 5 minutes to produce. either way, it doesn't matter if other people like what you create. all that matters is that you participate in the act of creation. some people will be moved by the work that you do, some people will light up, and other people will walk right past your work without any appreciation for it. and all of those scenarios are okay. that's life.

We're all on our own journey. and we all appreciate different things at different stages of our life depending on where we're at in our human development stage internally.

the bookmark

After speaking with this lady, she invited me to take one of her bookmarks, which had a QR code that linked to her instagram page. I picked a bookmark that she designed and we talked about sharing your art on social media.

I told her that i started making artwork recently as well, and showed her a picture that i'm drawing.

She lit up and encouraged me to start sharing my work with the world.

Here's how she put it...

She said "your work deserves a space to breathe in the world"

And i visually saw that in my mind. i saw my art work going from "hanging up on a wall in my room - to being showcased on the internet for others to participate with it".

And that was a bit inspiring to me.

She even encouraged me to simply follow her and share a picture of my artwork directly with her in a message if i felt uncomfortable sharing it with the world.

So here i am sharing.

I'm sharing the interaction with this lady named Sonali at the farmers market.

Sonali encouraged me to branch out and share a part of me that i'm just starting to cultivate.

But its an important part of me. it's a part of me that is opening my eyes to new possibilities in life.

I'm starting to see beauty in everything.

  • the design of cars

  • the design of apartments and homes

  • the design of people's clothing

  • the design of the sky and nature all around us

  • the design of cities and architecture and landscaping

Art is all around us. we just have to open our eyes and see the beauty and hard work that it took to get to this point.

your story sells

Another side note to mention from this interaction (which taught me a valuable lesson in life).

I purchased one of Sonali's art works. I believe that I connected with her story and that helped me get over the edge and make a purchase. so i purchased the connection and the story behind her artwork. i didn't purchase only the artwork. i purchased the interaction and the story.

a different story

After i purchased her artwork, i kept walking along the farmers market and found a man who had a lot more artwork than Sonali, and he was an outgoing salesman, and his work was great. he was creative and had a lot of different pieces of art to choose from. i even spoke with him for a while. but he was selling to alot of people and everyone that walked by he said "hey come over here and check out my artwork, you'll really like it". and people really did like his work.

But i didn't purchase anything, because i felt like when i looked at his artwork, i thought

"i could produce the same thing he created and why would i pay him for something i can create myself?"

That might have been the same thing i would've told myself with sonali's artwork. But i didn't because i knew her story. i didn't know this man's story. all i saw was his artwork. and that taught me a valuable lesson in life (and business).

People will invest in your life when they know your story. if you only show them the surface level, then they won't be invested in you. not everyone needs to know your entire life story, but share more with people that you trust, and watch those connections and support grow deeper.

If you're in business and you want loyalty, repeat customers, and more word of mouth, then sharing your story and the "why" might just help you get there. but it needs to be real, genuine, and authentic. don't share a made up story, or just share because you think it'll help your business. make something worth sharing with the world, and share the why behind it. if you believe in what you have to offer to the world and you have a strong "why" behind it, people who share the same values, story, and intentions, will support you.

I hope this story touched someone in a beautiful way and opened up your eyes to new possibilities in life.

That's what creation is all about.
